Stewart Genealogy

William Stewart (1811 - 1873) and Janette Bryden (1816 - 1901)

William Stewart was born 30 June 1811 in Ayrshire, Scotland. He was the son of Hugh Stewart and Janette Forsythe. He immigrated to the United States in 1840 and moved to Portsmouth, Ohio in 1842.

Portsmouth is located at the confluence of the Ohio and Scioto Rivers on the southern border of the state of Ohio. It's European-American roots date to the 1790's, when the small town of Alexandria was founded west of Portsmouth's site. Alexandria was flooded numerous times by the two rivers, so in 1803 Henry Massie formally laid out a new city away from the flood plains. Portsmouth was established in 1815. By the late 1840's it was the Scioto County seat and approximately 2,500 people lived in Portsmouth. There were at least four churches, two newspapers, and seventeen stores in the town. There also was a series of dry docks to repair and build steamboats.

William built a stone saw mill near the sight of Alexandria and carried on the business of quarring and sawing stone until 1855. After that he purchased 40 acres of land and became a market gardener. He died 24 July 1873 (from consumption) in Portsmouth, Scioto, Ohio, USA (age 62 years).

Janette Bryden was born 14 February 1816 in Manor Parish, Peeblesshire, Scotland. She was Christened 28 February 1816. Her parents were Walter Bryden (1783-1822) and Helen Forsyth (___-1817). She was raised in Peeblesshire, Scotland by a family named Penman probably because both her parents died by the time she was 7 years old. Janette died 13 July 1901 in Portsmouth, Scioto, Ohio, USA (age 85 years). (See Walter Bryden in the Bryden Genealogy below for more information.)

William and Janette were married in 1844 and both are buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Scioto, Ohio, USA.

-- Willie Stewart, born june 1855, died 24 August 1855, buried in Greenlawn Cemetery

The following account comes from a handwritten version passed down by Janette Bryden Stewart Welch who believed it had been written by Amy Stewart, daughter of William Bryden Stewart and grand-daughter of William Stewart.

William Stewart was born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1811, the son of Hugh Stewart, a miller, and Janette Forsythe, his wife. William was one of a family of 5 sons and 3 daughters. He was brought up in the strict Presbyterian faith, a son of the Covenant. He was taught the trade of a stone mason and followed it in Scotland.

In 1840 he came to the United States and worked in New York City. In 1842 he moved to Portsmouth, Ohio and engaged in the stone business on the west side. He built a stone saw mill near the sight of Alexandria and carried on the business of quarring and sawing stone until 1855. His heart began to break down and he felt he must go into other employment. In 1856 he purchased 40 acres of the old Martin Funk land from Martin's son Jacob Funk for $4000 and moved onto it. He occupied himself as a market gardener until his death.

He was married in 1844 to Miss Janette Bryden. She was born and raised in Publishire, Scotland by a family named Penman. She came to the U. S. for a visit when a young woman, and was returning to Scotland, but when she reached New York, William Stewart was there to meet her and persuaded her to marry him and remain in the U. S. which she did.
They had seven children:
1) Walter Penman Stewart was born in 1845 near Raven Rock on the west side. He was in the Civil War in 1863 and was captured in 1864 by the Rebels in Virginia and taken to Libby Prison. He was returned home in 1865 but his confinement ruined his health and he died on July 9th 1865.

The other children were:
Miss Jane Alice Stewart
Mrs. Margaret Ann Silcox
Mrs. Ella Forsythe Smith
Mr. Gilbert Stewart
Mr. William Bryden Stewart
and a baby Willie who died soon after birth.

Mr. Stewart was an upright and just man. He was as fond of the "bawbers" (dollars) as any Scotchman, but they had to be earned honestly and fairly. He was a typical Scotchman and his appearance and speech announced the fact wherever he went. He was a devout Presbyterian and fully believed the Westminster Confession of Faith. He not only believed it, but lived it in his everyday life. He was esteemed by all for his uprightness and sense of justice.

He died on July 26th 1870. His wife survived until July 14th 1901. Their home on the Funk land was later used as a school for underpriviledged children.

The follow information was found with the internet photo of Squire Utley's (1795-1882) tombstone:
Squire Utley died after a brief illness, at his late residence in North Western, November 23rd, aged 86 years 11 months and 21 days. David Utley, father of the deceased, located in North Western in 1794 on 200 acres of land, he being the first permanent settler in the place.

Squire Utley always resided in the town on the old homestead, to which he was greatly attached, never being absent, even for a night, when it was possible for him to be at home. Yet, he was a man of great activity, and possessed remarkable natural abillity. He had keen perception, sound judgment, and possessed great firmness. In political as well as all other matters he was governed by his convictions of right and duty. He possessed marked influence over men, and carried measures when it was generally supposed his success was impossible. One instance of this fact was in the passage of the act by the legislature establishing the Rome Savings Bank in 1851. The legislature was politically opposed to him, and the members of assembly from this county, one of whom was the late George Brayton, of Western, were in favor of a rival charter. Still Mr. Utley secured the Rome Savings Bank charter and it has since transpired that his success was accomplished through the late Thurlow Weed, who was the only person in that day who could control legislation on that subject, a fact ascertained by Mr. Utley, and through him the measure was carried to the surprise of all. He was one of the original directors of Fort Stanwix Bank, and was largely instrumental in forming its organization and shaping its character, and continued a director till his death. Having been so long a resident of the town, his influence has been very marked in its history, but this influence did not stop here, but was felt through all Central New York. He was a strong Democrat until the formation of the Republican party, when he identified himself with its issues and interest, and was always a delegate to the county conventions. He was ever clear and ready in debate. Several times he was supervisor of the town, and elected member of Assembly in 1832. He was nominated for sheriff in 1843 against Palmer V. Kellogg of Utica but failed of election through part disaffection at the time, when the great metaphorphoses of the party were taking place. The M. E. Society of North Western is largely indebted to his liberality and instrumentality for its church edifice and parsonage. At the time of the erection of the church, some who contributed largely for it proposed that the church be made a union church. This he decidedly opposed, remarking that a union church belonged to no one, and as the M. E. Society seemed likely to prevail, he caused it to be deeded to it. He was always very healthy and robust, and maintained his vigor remarkably until the final prostration, October 3, when worn out nature began to fail, since which time he suffered much. During life he often expressed a dread of the last struggle, but his change was very peaceful. He leaves four sons and two daughters, David Utley, of Livingston County, NY, Henry T. Utley of Waterville, NY, Alfred Utley of Rome, Alvin H. Utley of Westernville, Mrs. Sarah Baker and Miss Emily Utley of North Western. Mrs. Utley died in 1879.

The following is from "Biographical Sketches Extracted from OUR CITY AND ITS PEOPLE, A descriptive work on the city of Rome, New York, 1896". Transcribed by Coralynn Brown.
DAVID UTLEY
The Utley family is of English extraction, and for several generations imbibed those sterling habits of thrift and frugality which characterized native New Englanders. David Utley, sr., father of the subject of this memoir, was born in Connecticut, and came from Dutchess county, N. Y., to the town of Western, Oneida county, about the year 1795, guiding himself through the wilderness from Fort Stanwix by the aid of a compass and blazed trees. An ambitious pioneer, though broken in health, he managed to clear a farm and died there when comparatively a young man.

David Utley, son of David, sr., was born of Quaker parentage in Western on February 12, 1802, and spent his youthful life upon the parental acres, attending the district schools as opportunity afforded. He remained a farmer in that town until 1847, and for fifteen consecutive years served his townsmen as supervisor. In this latter capacity he was one of the influential members of the board and retained the confidence and respect of all with whom he came in contact. In 1847 he became a permanent resident of Rome, where he originated and founded the Fort Stanwix (now the Fort Stanwix National) Bank, which commenced business in December of that year on the corner of James and Dominick streets. Mr. Utley was elected its first president, a position he held by re-election until it became a national bank in 1865, when he was chosen to the same office in the reorganized institution, and served in that capacity until his death on June 20, 1882. He was succeeded by his son, Harmon G. Utley, who had entered the bank as teller in 1847 and subsequently became also its vice president. Mr. Utley was one of the ten founders of the Rome Exchange Bank and served as a director of that institution and its successor, the First National Bank, for many years. He was also a director for some time in the City Bank of Oswego and in the Rome & Watertown and Mobile & Ohio Railroad Companies, and was largely instrumental in securing the location of the R., W. & 0. Railroad shops in Rome. He was one of the founders and long a director of the Rome Iron Works and Merchants Iron Mill and for many years a member and vestryman of Zion Episcopal church.

Mr. Utley was widely recognized as an able financier and occupied a prominent position among leading bankers of Central New York. He was closely identified with various measures which owe a large measure of their success to his personal direction or valued counsels. He was shrewd, sagacious, and somewhat prophetic, a man of excellent business ability and sound judgment, and a powerful factor as a banker, and in local financial affairs. Unostentatious, quiet, and mild-mannered, but firm and decided in his opinion, he was a close student of human nature, a good diplomatist, a man of even temperament, and a prosperous and influential citizen. He took a keen interest in the welfare of his city and was always a liberal contributor to charitable and benevolent objects. A life-long Democrat he never sought public office, yet in Western he was pressed forward by his townsmen year after year to the highest elective position within their gift.

Mr. Utley was married, first, to Miss Amy Beckwith, daughter of Lemuel Beckwith, the first settler in 1789 of the town of Western, Oneida county, where she died leaving four children, of whom George P. and Harmon G. (of Rome) survive. His second wife was Miss Catherine Marsh, of New York City, who died without issue.

Beckwith Genealogy

There are two Beckwith connections in the Utley line which both come from the sons of Asa Beckwith (1734 - 1805).
His son Reuben Beckwith married Elizabeth Utley and his son Lemuel Beckwith was the father of Amy Beckwith.

Several internet sources have been consulted and compared in compiling the information below.
The best resource seemed to be an Ebook called "Beckwith Notes" by Albert Clayton Beckwith.
Also there is a free Ebook called "The Beckwiths" by Paul Edmond Beckwith that is referred to in the first book.
www/gulbangi.com/5families-o/index.htm is also useful.
The findagrave.com website is very useful and the accompanying information seems generally reliable. Most of the dates for the De Malebisse section came from Find a Grave.

There is a lot of confusion about the Beckwith line as it comes down after Sir Marmaduke and through Matthew Beckwith. Much of this confusion has been caused by an abundance of duplicate names. What follows is our current attempt to sort out the lines that go down to Asa Beckwith in Western, New York. Additional side lines are shown here because they were part of our search and might prove helpful to others.

Listed in Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700:
BECKWITH, Joseph (1679-1741) & Mary LEE (1676-1759-61), m2 Daniel Sterling, m3 John Riggs; m 18 May 1699 ...

From "Beckwith Notes": Capt. Joseph Beckwith, son of Joseph and Susannah, born at Lyme, April 15, 1679; married Marah Lee, May 18, 1699; died later than 1727. Known circumstances indicate plainly that he was a man of character, ability, and wealth. Marah was daughter of Lieut. Thomas Lee and his second wife, Mary De Wolf. His widow was married to Capt. Daniel Sterling, May 16, 1745. Her third marriage, to Mr. Riggs, was but a few years before her death, which was in 1759. In her will, dated June 18, 1759, she names Capt. Joseph Beckwith's children as her heirs, and his son Capt. Thomas as executor. In 1757 she visited her brother, Stephen Lee, then of Colchester, which should remove the doubt that has been thrown upon her parentage. The stumbling-block may have been the fact that an elder half-sister was named Mary, as she is herself named in later records. But the form of the name in Lyme marriage record, "Marah" was probably given her in baptism, and "Mary" was a later usage.

The list of other children of Thomas Lee and Mary DeWolf is from "Hyge Genealogy" Ebook, page 33: IV. Benjamin Hyde.

From an E-book "Gazetteer and Business Directory of Oneida County, N.Y. for 1869" -- Gazetteer of Towns, page 130:
The settlement of the town of Western was commenced in 1789, by Asa Beckwith, and his four sons, Asa, Reuben, Wolcott and Lemuel, who were soon followed by Henry Wager. With a single exception, these settlers continued to reside until their deaths, upon the same farms upon which they first located. Their nearest neighbors were at Fort Stanwix, (Rome,) nearly ten miles distant. Their grain, potatoes, etc, for seed, had to be procured at the German Flats. Henry Wager and Asa Beckwith went on foot to German flats for seed potatoes, and each brought home a bushel upon his back. These were the first potatoes planted in town. Mr. Wager harvested seventy bushels in the fall, from his one bushel of seed. The proprietors of this town refused to sell their land, but leased it in perpetuity, or for three lives, receiving annual rents. This materially retarded the prosperity of the town. In the fall of 1789, the inhabitants built a bridge across the Mohawk River at this place, the first one built between its source and is junction with the Hudson. There was not a plank or a stick of hewn timber of any kind in it. The first church (Bap.) was formed in 1798. The first town meeting was held at the house of Ezekiel Sheldon, and John Hall was elected supervisor. He held the office two years, and was succeeded by Henry Wager, who held the office twenty-four years.

From "Chapter 50 of Our County and It's People" (http://oneida.nygenweb.net/misc/wager/ch50.html):
The Town of Western, New York is situated north of the center of Oneida county. The town is well watered by the Mohawk, the Lansing Kill, Stinger's Creek Big Brook and other small streams. Aside from the valley of the Mohawk and small tracts on some of the other streams, the surface of the town is very hilly. The soil of the valley is a fertile alluvium, which is very productive, while on the highlands it is loam and very stony in places, but good for grains and grazing.

The first permanent settlers in the town were Asa Beckwith and his four sons, Asa, jr., Reuben, Wolcott and Samuel. They located on the Mohawk River and were the first settlers in this county north of the Mohawk, their nearest neighbors being for some time at Fort Stanwix. But they were not long alone. The fertile lands along the Mohawk were attractive and other settlers came in rapidly.

David Utley was the first permanent settler on the site of North Western (three miles north of Westernville), where he purchased 200 acres of land about 1795. It was the farm afterwards occupied by his son, Squire Utley. (See biography in this volume.) A man named John Clear had squatted on a part of this farm about a year before Mr. Utley came in. He had no title and Mr. Utley permitted him to retain, and remain on, fifty acres of land, so that he might get a start, and at a later date Mr. Utley purchased the land back from him.

Officers elected at the first town meeting held on the 4th day of April, 1797 include assessor Asa Beckwith, Jr.

John Tilley was born 15 December 1571 in Bedfordshire, England. He died 11 January 1621 in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, USA. His parents were Robert Tilley (1540-1613) and Elizabeth Ellborne (___-1614). John Tilley was a passenger on the Mayflower. He died in the first winter.
John Tilley married Joan Hurst Sept 20, 1596 in England.
Joan Hurst was the daughter of William and Rose Hurst. Joan had been married firstly to a Mr. Curtis and had a daughter, Joan, who was a step-daughter of John Tilley. John and Joan Tilley had four children: John, Rose, Robert, and Elizabeth. John's children, John, Rose, Robert, and his step-daughter, Joan, stayed in England; the girls being married and the boys engaged in apprenticeships. It was not until a descendant of one of the children left in England applied for membership in Society of Mayflower Descendants based on his ancestor, John Tilley, that the information that Elizabeth was not an only child was known on this side of the Atlantic.

-- Elizabeth Tilley (1607-1687) married John Howland (1591-1672)

Elizabeth Tilley (1607-1687) and John Howland (1591 - 1672)

John Howland was born in 1591 in Fenstanton, Huntingdonshire District, Cambridgeshire, England. He came to Plymouth on the Mayflower. He died 23 February 1672 in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, USA. His parents were Henry Howland (1566-1635 and Anne Margaret Aires (1567-1629). See Howland Genealogy below.

American history legend from the voyage of the Mayflower and founding of Plymouth Rock in 1620. American children discover John Howland when they learn of the Pilgrims, Plymouth Rock, and the first Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims' leader Governor William Bradford wrote a first hand account of the Pilgrim history from 1620 to 1647. This account was first published in 1952, and is considered one of the best first hand accounts of any kind on American history. In Bradford's account of the voyage over on the Mayflower, he tells of how John Howland washed overboard in violent storm. Howland was 29 years of age at the time. Howland was able to grab some ropes from the sails and gradually pull himself back on board the ship. This event and Bradford's account of it made John Howland a legend. Howland's name and account has been published in hundreds of publications and in school history books. As myths can grow, the story had changed that he had died and was the first pilgrim to die, thus the oldest burial in the Plymouth cemetery, Burial Hill. In fact, he survived, married and had a number of children with Elizabeth Tilley Howland, and lived to 80 plus, according to his grave stone. His grave stone also states from Plymouth records that he was the last male to die from the original pilgrims of the Mayflower.

Elizabeth Tilley was born 30 August 1607 in Henlow, Bedfordshire, England. She came to Plymouth on the Mayflower with her parents. Elizabeth was orphaned in the New World, at the age of thirteen, after her parents died the first winter in Plymouth. She died 21 December 1687, in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts, USA; and is buried in Ancient Little Neck Cemetery, East Providence, Rhode Island, USA in the Brown family plot. Inscription: Here ended the Pilgrimage of Elizabeth Tilley Howland who died Wednesday 21-31 Dec. 1687 at home of her daughter Lydia and husband James Brown in Swansea – Elizabeth married Pilgrim John Howland who came with her in the Mayflower December 1620. From them are descended a numerous posterity. In ELIZABETH'S Will the following inspiring language is used "It is my will and charge to all my Children that they walke in ye Feare of ye Lord and in Love and Peace towards each other."

Among Plymouth's early residents, who varied widely in social standing, John Browne came with a great deal of respectability. Almost immediately upon his arrival in the New World, he was appointed Assistant to the governor of Plymouth Colony and went on to serve in a number of prestigious leadership positions. His full biography can be found in Anderson's Great Migration series, Vol I [1999], pp.420-429.
Dorothy Browne's death and burial are recorded in Plymouth Colony Records (Mayflower Descendant 19:22). Some internet entries give her maiden name as Beauchamp, but this needs confirmation. -- Dorothy Walker (1749 - 1843), married Squire Hill (1747-1826)

Dorothy Walker (1749 - 1834) and Squire Hill (1747 - 1826)

Dorothy Walker was born 21 September 1749 in Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, USA. She died 17 March 1834 in Canajoharie, Montgomery County, New York, USA. Dorothy Walker Hill is a descendant of 4 Mayflower passengers: Husband and wife, John Tilley and Joan Hurst, and their daughter, Elizabeth Tilley; and single man John Howland who married Elizabeth Tilley in Plymouth Colony 3 years after the arrival of the Mayflower.
Their daughter, Lydia Howland, married James Brown; their son, James Brown Jr, married Margaret Denison; their son, William Brown, married Elizabeth Long; their daughter, Bethia Brown (1718 - 1771), married Ebenezer Walker (1716 - 1799); Dorothy Walker was their daughter.

Squire Hill was born 14 August 1747 in Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut, USA. He died 17 November 1826 in Canajoharie, Montgomery County, New York, USA. Squire Hill was the son of Zaccheus and Mary (Squire/Squier) Hill. He married Dorothy Walker. He was the father of nine children: Bethia, Mary, Zaccheus, Ebenezer, Elizabeth, Squier, William, Pliny, and Dorothy.

Squire Hill served in the Revolutionary War as part of a select group of volunteers from Ashford, Connecticut who marched to Massachusetts to answer the Lexington Alarm in April 1775. This company, in which Squire Hill was a sergeant, attracted great attention on their march by their orderly and soldierly bearing. They were received at Cambridge with special distinction as the first trained troops that had come from abroad to the aid of Massachusetts.

On May 1, 1775, Sgt. Squire Hill received a commission as Ensign in the 5th Company of the 3rd Connecticut Regiment under Col. Israel Putnam, and engaged in the Battle of Bunker Hill of June 17, 1775. He received a Captain's commission on March 1, 1778. At the close of the war, the government was indebted to Capt. Hill for horses and beef which had been furnished to the troops. A portion of this was repaid in worthless scrip, and Capt. Hill never made application for the remainder. He, in common with many affluent families, was almost reduced to poverty by the inability of the government to redeem its pledges.

Capt Hill's home was twice burned by Tories, and all of his papers destroyed. He was obliged, after his return from the war, to mortgage his farm, which he later sold and moved to Wales, Hampden County, Massachusetts, then to Claverack, Columbia County, New York, then to Canajoharie, Montgomery County, New York. He lived there until his death, after an illness of three months duration. All the quarrels of the neighborhood were referred to him for arbitration. He said that in all the numerous times he had seen Gen. George Washington, he only once knew him to smile, and that was caused by a letter received from Lafayette (the French General who served in Washington's Continental Army.)

Capt. Hill was a large man, tall, with blue eyes, and light-brown hair, and a smiling countenance. He was a farmer, but, as quaintly expressed, "never milked a cow," indicating more of the gentleman farmer.
Burial: Squire Hill Farm, Waterville, Montgomery County, New York, USA
Plot: Only grave in a field on the property of the Squire Hill Farm, named for Col. Squire Hill
Inscription: Captain Squire Hill is actually buried across the road from what is now Squire Hill Farms (the original family farm). The land belongs to the Sweet family of North Carolina. The large stone marker next to the grave monument placed by the DAR or Sons of the Revolution is the grave of Squire's wife, and the other smaller stones are their children who died young. The land was cleared by the owner of Squire Hill Farms and the decorative fence put up several years ago. Originally, the grave site was very overgrown.

Cley, Anglo-Saxon Clæg "clay", is on the river Glaven in Norfolk, England. Cley was once one of the largest/busiest ports in all of England, where wool, grain, malt, fish, spices, coal, cloth, wheat, barley, and oats were exported and/or imported. The many Flemish gables in the town are a reminder of trade with the Low Countries. But despite its name, Cley has not been "next the sea" since the 17th century as Lady Anne Greenway and her kin saw, due to land reclamation which the traders and craftsmen from Flanders, Netherlands, and Belgium foresaw, taught, planned, and provided.
Wiveton is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is situated on the west bank of the River Glaven, 1.9 miles inland (now in 2014) from the coast and directly across the river from the village of Cley next the Sea.
Until the 17th century, the River Glaven was navigable and Wiveton was a port. The outline of the former massive , busy, and large harbor can still be seen in the fields between Wiveton and Cley.
